Along the foothills of Mount Kenya, Nyeri County produces specialty coffees with distinct and vibrant flavour profiles. Named after the Maasai word nyiro, meaning red, for the area's rich volcanic soil, Nyeri enjoys uniquely favourable microclimates for growing Arabica crops. Here, smallholder family farms carefully hand-pick daily harvests before delivering them to local wet mills, known in Kenya as coffee factories, for processing. Kenyan coffee is meticulously graded by screen size, with AA beans representing the largest screen size and highly valued lots.
The Muthua-Ini Factory is one of six wet mills managed by the Mutheka Farmers' Cooperative Society (FCS). The factory represents around 1,400 smallholder farmers who cultivate specialty varieties like SL28 and SL34 on small, half-acre family plots. These small-scale farms give producers tight control over their harvests, allowing them to select only the ripest cherries. This is a washed coffee, medium roasted by Origin Coffee Roasting.
