We have been lucky enough to enjoy many delicious coffees from the Buf Cafe organisation and group of washing stations over the years. They never disappoint, offering wonderful flavours and inspiring stories of entrepreneurship. You can learn more about this particular lot and the organisation that made it possible below.

About Buf Cafe

Buf Cafe's story is as inspiring as their coffee is delicious. Despite being widowed in the Rwandan genocide of 1994, local businesswoman Epiphanie Mukashyaka decided to remain at the family coffee farm and got the local community involved in rebuilding the business.

Since then, Buf Café has grown from supporting ~500 local farmers to buying coffee cherries from more than 7000 smallholding farmers in the greater region and has completed the construction of its fourth washing station to keep up with demand. Today, Epiphanie is an integral part of the local community; she offers work and support to thousands of local women in the coffee industry and is an inspiration to countless female entrepreneurs in Rwanda.

About this Nyarusiza lot

Nyarusiza was actually the first washing station in the Buf Cafe group, established in 2003. We've enjoyed many delicious coffees processed at Nyarusiza, thanks to the meticulous approach to quality, but none quite like this one. This lot has undergone an experimental, extended 94-hour fermentation, with delicious results.

Phaedon's tasting notes

I chuckled to myself when I saw how our friends at Origin had titled this coffee; the word "funky" appeared more than once in my tasting notes. Funky it certainly is, in all the best ways. I also found myself agreeing with the palates at Origin HQ in terms of the purple quality of this coffee. Funky and purple; what more could you want?

This coffee is all about the fruit. You may find notes of melon; I certainly found lots of berry notes including blackcurrant (sometimes quite like Ribena) and sometimes cherry. It's syrupy, sweet, and simply delicious. In some brews, I also found some citrus acidity that added a different quality to the cup.

I highly recommend this coffee for pour-overs, batch brews, siphon brews, AeroPress or even a good old moka pot.

Origin's notes

  • Flavour: Spanspek (canteloupe), purple fruit (blackberry, black currant), good sweetness, peppermint freshness
  • Body: Sticky
  • Roast: Light
  • Acidity: Medium, black grape
  • Suggested brewing: Siphon, Pourover, plunger, Aeropress, Moka pot
