Ugandan coffee has long been known for its indigenous Robusta trees and commodity-grade harvests. But after overcoming significant 20th-century political and social hurdles, the country is now exporting more specialty-grade Arabica lots that are putting the East African nation firmly on the radar of coffee lovers worldwide.

Many of Uganda’s most celebrated coffee farms are dotted around Mount Elgon, such as those near Sipi Falls. In this scenic area, famous for its high elevation and panoramic views, Arabica coffee is cultivated by smallholder farming families. Nearby sits the Sipi washing station, managed by the Zukuka Bora Coffee Company, which works directly with local growers. Thanks to cooler mountain temperatures and abundant rainfall compared to the surrounding plains, the cherries here develop a marked sweetness and complexity. Today, these standout lots from Sipi represent some of Zukuka Bora’s most sought-after exports.

Origin Coffee Roasting has released a pair of lots from Sipi Tangwen. Both coffees were grown in the same region from Kenyan-heritage SL-28 and SL-34 varieties and processed at the same washing station, offering a direct look at how processing shapes flavour: this lot underwent an extended 92-hour fermentation as part of its washed processing, while its companion is an anaerobic natural.

Origin’s notes

“Sipi Tangwen is a specialty Arabica coffee produced by smallholder farmers in the Tangwen community on Mount Elgon.

“This lot is washed with an extended 92-hour fermentation, a controlled process that allows fermentation to influence the coffee's flavour development before the beans are washed and dried. The result is a clean yet expressive cup with notes of strawberry, dark chocolate and caramel.

“Similar Tangwen lots are produced at around 1,900–2,050 metres and are recognised for their high quality.”

  • Flavours: Strawberry, dark chocolate, caramel, black tea & red apple
  • Body: Velvety, smooth
  • Acidity: Fruity
  • Roast: Medium
  • Brewing: Chemex, AeroPress, siphon, plunger, espresso & milk-based

Coffee details from Origin

“Tangwen is located in the Sipi subregion on the slopes of Mount Elgon, where smallholder farmers grow Arabica at approximately 1,900–2,050 metres above sea level. The area's high elevation, volcanic soils and cool mountain climate provide favourable conditions for producing complex coffees.

“Tangwen farmers work with Zukuka Bora Coffee Company, with premiums from coffee purchases supporting community projects including education, clean water and farmer training.”
