Quaffee created the Beyond Blend for the Beyond restaurant on Buitenverwachting wine farm, where Quaffee also does its roasting. The blend was crafted in collaboration with famous restaurateur Peter Templehoff who runs the Beyond restaurant. It was designed specifically for espresso and aims to provide a traditional yet balanced flavour profile.
Phaedon's tasting notes
This blend is unquestionably intended for espresso, but you can stretch the definition a little bit. If you like espresso-like coffees such as those made in a moka pot, AeroPress or Nanopresso, then you will also love this blend. It sings in a short concentrated shot where you can enjoy the full effects of the candy-like sweetness and heavy body. It scratches that traditional Italian espresso itch, but with a definite African brightness to balance it out perfectly.
The blend is made up of an Organic Honduran, a traditional Brazilian, roasted just past second crack. Then a light roast of an Earthy Ethiopian Sidama and a bright Yirgacheffee. The percentages favour the darker roasted coffee but can change to suit the seasonal and ageing characteristics of the coffees in the blend.
In espresso, it comes through with lemon, cigar and dark chocolate.
