For its founders, Jay Kim and Kenzie Chay, UFO Coffee Tools, or Utility-Focused Objects, began as a quest to address the limitations of iconic cone brewers. While those classic devices offer an exciting amount of flavour complexity, they also require an exacting degree of precision. Jay, an acclaimed brewer and coffee educator based in Korea, is well-known for his unfiltered approaches to brewing and hospitality with compassion and consideration. Looking to develop a tool that offers enthusiasts what they love about conical drippers, but with more repeatable results, Jay tapped his close friend and talented industrial designer, Kenzie Chay.
Together, the two created the out-of-this-world UFO Dripper. In 2024, after months of rigorously testing prototypes, the UFO made its breakout debut at the World Brewers Cup (WBrC) in Chicago. Japanese competitor Wataru Iidaka used the UFO to brew his way to second place, instantly putting the UFO on the specialty coffee map. Recently, the UFO climbed even higher, earning Malaysian barista Nas Jaafar the coveted title of 2026 World Brewers Cup Champion.
About the UFO Dripper
The UFO Coffee Tools V3 Pour-Over Dripper is crafted from high-grade, single-walled Tritan plastic to offer brewers exceptional thermal stability and rugged durability. It features an innovative 80-degree wall angle designed to offer clarity in the cup alongside consistency across brews. When compared to traditional 60-degree angle brewers, the UFO's wide, flattened geometry optimises the contact time between coffee and water, allowing for optimal extraction rates even across different doses. This shape promotes an even drawdown without stalled flows. Brewers can confidently adjust coffee doses without needing to tweak other brewing variables thanks to the UFO's shallow walls and more uniform bed depth. This means that unlike other drippers, increasing your coffee dose won't affect the central coffee column's height as much, or create more water resistance.
The UFO responds well to both light and dark roasted coffees, but perhaps more importantly, its wide surface area remains forgiving despite unexpected changes to your pour rates or accidental shifts during a brew. Instead of traditional protruding ridges or ribs, such as those found on a Hario V60 or an Origami's pleated folds, the UFO features recessed air channels that work to vent pressure and keep the filter stable. This results in fewer clogs, more consistent drawdowns, and a smooth cup, even if your pour is imperfect.
The UFO V3 also includes a detachable silicone base that fits comfortably over most carafes or servers. When detached from this base, the inner cone is built to sit directly onto a Hario Switch base. This means you can use the UFO V3 to shift between standard percolation and immersion brewing, offering professional and amateur brewers a highly versatile range of techniques.
