When you think of African specialty coffee, Uganda might not be the first origin that comes to mind, but its specialty-grade beans remain one of the coffee world's best-kept secrets. High in the nation’s western region, the fertile slopes along the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains offer ideal conditions for cultivating quality single-origin varieties. Here, smallholder farmers meticulously hand-pick ripe coffee cherries before delivering them to local collection hubs. In Kyarumba, Agri Evolve manages collection and transports coffee harvests to its central coffee mill in Nyabirongo. Along with processing, it empowers the local community through agronomic training, sustainable farming practices, and fair market access.
About Uganda Nyabirongo Anaerobic Natural coffee
Composed of SL14 and SL28 varieties, this green, unroasted coffee underwent a 72-hour anaerobic fermentation at Nyabirongo. After being weighed and floated, the cherries were sealed in oxygen-deprived tanks before slowly drying on raised African beds. Prized for their bright acidity and complex, fruit-forward notes, SL14 and SL28 are ideal candidates for this extended style of processing.
Having recently enjoyed some exceptional Nyabirongo coffees roasted by Cedar and Quaffee, we knew we had to jump at the opportunity to offer this unroasted anaerobic natural lot!
