The specialty coffee world loves its acronyms - from TDS and WDT to RDT. Few, however, have become as recognisable as the iconic NCD (Nucleus Coffee Distributor). Created by Bosnian-Australian barista Saša Šestić, who in 2011 set out to solve a fundamental challenge in espresso extraction: channelling. Seeking a repeatable way to distribute coffee grounds before tamping, Saša engineered the original wedge-style tool - initially launched as the ONA Coffee Distributor and now known as the Nucleus Coffee Distributor (NCD). Beyond introducing an entire category of coffee distribution tools, the NCD's original design remains a favourite in commercial settings. It is fast, effective, and saves baristas vital minutes in busy cafés, allowing them to skip manual needle raking by placing the tool on a portafilter and spinning gently. Yet, even iconic gear has room to improve. Astute baristas noted that the NCD's fins level only the top portion of the coffee bed without reaching the bottom. While still significantly improving extraction consistency, this depth limitation inspired Nucleus to take puck prep a step further with the NCD Pulse.

About the Nucleus Coffee Distributor Pulse

While the original Nucleus Coffee Distributor relies on manual rotation and gravity, the NCD Pulse uses high-frequency micro-vibrations to collapse internal air pockets as you spin. Once placed on your portafilter, the tool agitates the bed to deliver horizontal and vertical distribution in just two seconds. This makes it significantly more effective than traditional surface distributors while remaining practical for high-volume cafés.

Powered by an internal lithium-ion battery rated for up to 1,000 cycles per charge, the NCD Pulse recharges via its wireless USB-C docking stand. It also features clear depth adjustment to suit a wide range of 58mm portafilter baskets and dose sizes.
