The Wacaco Prestina is a portable immersion brewer designed for full-bodied cups without a paper filter. Wacaco took the traditional plunger method for immersion brews and removed the plunger in favour of a cup-driven press. This is combined with a dual-mesh stainless steel filter for a gentle pressure-assisted approach. What sets this cylindrical coffee maker apart, however, is the Prestina’s integrated “duck valve”. This mechanism contains the coffee until your brew has finished steeping and you press down on the cap.

Wacaco’s Prestina is compatible with Octaroma insulated mugs, meaning you can brew coffee directly into one in place of the included cup. With a brewing chamber capacity of 375ml (marked up to 240ml), the Prestina pairs best with the Lungo (300ml) and Grande (435ml) mug sizes.

How to use Wacaco’s Prestina

Pull out the Prestina’s cap and cup before placing the microfilter below the brewing chamber. Seat the chamber inside the cup and add 15g of medium to medium-fine coffee grounds. Pour hot water to the max line or according to taste. To evenly saturate your bed, stir and allow the coffee to steep for 2 minutes. Then, replace the top cap and press gently to open the duck valve and release the brewed coffee into the cup. Once the coffee has drained, knock out the spent puck and give the brewer a quick rinse, or nest the Prestina back together if you’re on the move.

The Prestina leaves plenty of room to experiment based on your coffee and taste preferences. For example, use 18g of coffee and allow for a longer contact time for a bolder brew, or try 12 or 13g with a shorter steep for a lighter body.
